If this is really true, then Netflix's algorithm is pretty stupid. The algorithm shouldn't take not-yet-released movies into consideration. Furthermore, it wouldn't be too hard to figure out if people are trying to beat the allocation system.

JLee

By the way... this has NOTHING to do with throttling. This is a question of title allocation. Nearly everybody who suspects they are being throttled will agree that Netflix can do all the title allocation they want... Netflix surely has SOME title in stock for those of us with hundreds of items in our queues. Throttling is a question of when they acknowledge receipt of dvds and when they send new ones out.

I will ALMOST ALWAYS prefer to have my second (or third, or fourth) choice in my queue sent today rather than my first choice sent tomorrow (or the next day, or the day after that...).

JLee

I just tried this for my last shipment of 3 dvds. It didn't work for me. They skipped right over my long wait dvd.

REN

I don't think it is meant for "long wait" movies which are movies that aren't available.

As I udnerstand it, it is for a situation where one movie is in stock and 2 people want it, and you then get priority over the other person. If you didn't get the movie you might end up getting a "next day" delay. Most likely the movie in question wouldn't even have a wait status when looked at in your queue.

Maybe they just always have plenty of movies in stock that Becky wants. It doesn't mean her "trick" works.

Greg

I too keep soon to be released titles in the top spots, and as soon as they become available, I have has a 95% success rate getting them shipped to me. However, timing of a return also determines that success rate. I know that if I return a movie on Thursday, then it will arrive at NF on Monday, and the new release will be shipped out, either on Monday or Tuesday at the latest. But I do add soon to be released titles to my queue as soon as I find out the release dates.

I thinks THAT'S the real "trick". You need to get your returns back on a Monday or Tuesday for new releases. Otherwise I still think NF gives low renters first choice when there is a tie for the last disc available, no matter what your queue looks like.

So what is this trick?!

NF sent me emails at 6:32am that they had all my movies back. But now at 8:16am, ALL THE MOVIES ARE STILL SHOWING IN MY QUEUE!!!!!!

Even though I received the emails, they haven't removed them from my queue! Are they holding then and delaying my shipments?!

Sonja

It's worth attempting if you really want to get the new releases sent to you.

She wasn't talking about getting new releases, she said she does it to always get her #1 pick, no matter what it is.

Also, it is 10:08Am and my queue STILL shows all the movies NF has said, via email, that they have received. They STILL HAVE NOT CLEARED OUT MY QUEUE!!!!!!!!

YET ANOTHER THROTTLE METHOD!!!

Rich Moore

Yeah, I just noticed them doing the same thing to me today. They sent me the e-mail showing that they recieved the dvd's, they show a + on my south park s5d2 disc, but they didn't take away the s6d1 disc, and show that one of my anime disc is still out even though they received it. I am subject to throttling for sure this month, I rented a lot last month and turned them quickly. Maybe that is why they are doing this, or maybe a computer glitch, not really sure...

Rich Moore

I just called netflix, they said that they were updating their web site today, and that's why everything looks goofy with the discs out and stuff. I guess we will know in a couple of days if that was true or not....

Rich Moore

Well, I just noticed that although they didn't acknoledge the reciept of the dvd's on the web page, they are sending me two "extra" dvd's, which makes three out that I should have. I doubt they will be sent today due to throttling though..

Cory

I can tell you this.. The Easton, MD distrubution center is bad!! Wrong movies, missing movies and more. I have emailed Netflix about it and I continue to get canned responses from them. It's not really the Netflix Website, it has everything to do with your 'local' disto. centers, its supervisors and employees.

I say start with the centers, drop a message in your return envelope, mark it 'To Manager' and let them know what you really think.

You don't actually think NetFlix CS actually does anything with complaints do you. Hell No!

Cory

Oh, and one more thing. I have it direct from the mouth of a NetFlix employee at another distro. center that yes, they do delay shipments. They purposely break up 3 and 5 at a time shipments. Just check your postmarks and compare with the sites ship date.

The real kicker is he does not know exactly why, but managers are saying thats how it is to be done.

Well, okay, at 11:30am they finally left my queue and now I have 3 showing as shipping. We'll see if they ship out today or not though.

So why are they breaking shipments up? If all happen to get back the same day, they hold some?! I guess I need them to tell me how many I can watch at one time.

Now get a load of this CR*P!

I just went back to my queue and looked at it. Just awhile ago I finally had my returns cleared out and movies in "shipping" status including "The Incredibles" & "Nascar: Imax", which are new releases, along with a "Columbo" disc.

Now both "Nascar & Incredibles" have been removed and replaced by: "Your next available movie is awaiting shipment." Columbo is still in there.

NOW WHAT!!!??? Now they aren't going to send me those movies?! They are no longer anywhere in my queue!

RP

Did the same thing to me today. I called them, and they said those movies that are now missing are actually still being processed to ship, but that the website isn't updating properly right now.

We'll see if that ends up being the truth.

Hmmmm. They were in there, now they are gone but others are still there that were there to be shipped. So only SOME of the discs are not being updated right?!

Just when you can't see how they can get any worse...

I can't wait until the 25th and I cancel them and get off this downhill ride!

Cory

Okay.. technical problems.. I can understand. Simply put a freak'n message up on the site for all users to see rather than let people make assumptions.

Yes, I had "The Incredibles" in my cue and said shipping today. All that has been removed saying 'Shipping on Tuesday'.. Some underhanded BS is going on at the NetFlix distros. I emailed them today and no response. But I can tell you, from what I am hearing its not good.

Mine still hasn't changed. All I have now is "Your next available movie is awaiting shipment" except for the "Columbo" disc that says "Shipping today". I'm beginning to think they yanked back my new releases.

Rich Moore

Well, they now corrected my accout, shipping one of the two new discs today, the other tomorrow (I am being throttled, I am home a lot doing rehab, have a lot of extra time due to the fact that I can't work until I heal more, so I am watching lots of movies, no cable where I am staying.) All is corrected with my account, at least right now.

chriswar

I suspected technical problems since I was getting shipping and receiving e-mails that made sense, but my queue was messed up. We'll see if I get the disc tomorrow!

Interesting to see how paranoid we get with Netflix because of throttling. Makes you think they are up to other nefarious tricks!

I basically have made my peace with Netflix and accepted that with 5 at time, I am only getting 15 discs a month. I just decided to keep my rentals under 15 a month and I get the fantastic service I started with. Everything I want (mostly older stuff anyway) is available now and Netflix ships and receives in a day! Yes, it would be cool to have 90 discs a month and have them all shipped in a day, certainly that's what they are promising with "unlimited" rental, but I decided that great service is worth the tradeoff of throttling myself!

Does anyone have any evidence that pulling back on "quick turn arounds" results in your account being unthrottled? That's one of the annoying throttle-facts... because it's not "official" there's no way of knowing if you can see any results by slowing down your returns. Speaking of "throttling"... I gave up on Fridauy Night Lights and eventually had soemone else order it for me (yes really). It's never been less than 'Long Wait' in my queue (and I've put it on the queue of several co-workers who got it as 'now' straight away). Anyone else have trouble with this title? Or another title that simply won't come off long wait long after it should have?

Mark,

Your comment was so nice, you said it thrice!

Anyway, I put Friday Night Lights in my queue last week to see and it showed as "now". I had since removed it. I put it back in just now, and it is "now".

That's the kind of stuff that gets to ya.

Okay, its me again. My queue is back to normal and my new releases are back in it. They still show "shipping today" so we'll see.

Its funny. If it had been BB we'd be upset that their website is all screwed up and useless but when its NF, we accuse them of throttling us. We only do it because it so evident that it IS happening.

I have been having problems with the service getting slow, this is what they wrote.
"In determining priority for shipping and inventory allocation, we give priority to those members who receive the fewest DVDs through our service.
As a result, those members who receive the most movies may experience next-day shipping and receive movies lower in their Queue more often than our other members. By prioritizing in this way, we help assure a balanced experience for all our members. Those that rent a lot of movies get a great
value and those with lighter viewing habits are able to count on our service to meet their limited needs."
When I first signed up, i was getting 6 maybe 9 a week, this stopped after a month, now i'm getting 3 a week. They get my dvd's back on monday, and they don't ship new ones until wednesday, I don't receive until thursday or friday. I'm QUITING as soon as my membership is up this month. If they loose enouph customers, maybe they'll change their policy.

Cory

hackingnetflix should do an article about 5 disc users paying more and getting screwed 'throttled' against 3 disc users. They offer the service, and it sounds like they either can't handle the customer base / dvd stock, or just plain ripping people off.

I have been with NF since Feb '03 on the 3-out plan. I have never received more than 3 per week or 12 per month. I only get 3-day delivery. Since last summer, I have gotten more & more "shipping tomorrows" and slow returns (4-6 days). Now its hard for me to get 9-10 per month. I plan on quiting NF this month. I have been using BB for the past 2 months and get good service. On their 3-out, I can get 6 per week. Good 2-day delivery each way & USPS scanning works wonders. $3 cheaper and 2 free rentals which I use for free games each month.

Robert

Netflix is nice and most shipments arrive within a day or two but I am finding less of a need for some reason. Given a few months to clear out my queue (I have like 40 dvds) and I will probably be switching services. I expect them to throttle it. The latest new release they had Short Wait on it so I told my mom to just ship out one at a time to give a better chance of getting the new release and we got it on the first shot.

Keith

Hi, Don't know whether this is the right place for this but here goes anyway - member since 1998, really conscious about keeping the dvds moving and have been very pleased with the performance of Netflix. In the last month or so I've noticed a big change - everything now, without exception, is marked to be shipped the next day. I've seen this before but now it is every dvd. In the past I'd see something recieved in the morning and by afternoon something new had been shipped. I'm not the paranoid sort but this really is happening and changing my experience. Adding a day or so to every transaction has really changed the number of movies I'm getting. Is anyone else experiencing this? Who do I complain to? Thanks, Keith

Greetings,

I have been a Netflix customer for many years. Along with many of you, I have noticed and complained about an overall slowdown in the shipment of DVDs to my account. Many DVDs are now shipped a day or more after they are received. However, something new is going on.

Historically, new releases were always shipped out on Mondays if Netflix had received a returned DVD by Monday. Since last month, new releases are shipping on Tuesdays even when DVDs are received on Mondays. Today, I called to inquire about why this is happening. I was told that individual studios determine when Netflix is able to ship a new release. According to the Customer Service Rep, Netflix is only able to ship a new release on a Monday if the studio has approved it. Otherwise, new releases are shipped on Tuesdays. Does anyone know if this is accurate information, or is this another throttle tactic? If it is accurate, the studios must have changed their policies because this never happened in the past.

I would be very interested to hear from others about their recent experiences with the shipping of new releases. Here are a few new releases that have shipped (or are scheduled to ship) on Tuesdays instead of Monday: Alfie, Being Julia, Spanglish, Primer, and Birth.

Many thanks,

Blanca

Jay

Netflix sucks - movies are always scratched.

Trev

About the movie primer... I know it was produced for 7g's under a very small label called Think Films. I doubt Think Films said anything to NF about it.

Ramona M Bly

I have never had to sign in with a password etc to get into account. Now I have to sign it. I do not like this at all. thank you Ramona M. Bly

All of the foreging comments present an interesting observation. Everyone thinks that trickery and getting over on someone is the way to get ahead in life. This Earth we kive on is only temporary! Thia is a choosing point in eternity! Do you choose God or yourselves?.....Quo Vadis?
As for me and my house, we'll serve the Lord

Compared to BLOCK Busters NetFlix is a real improvement! I belonged to BB about 2 years and they changed the rules on me twice. They were always pulling that throttling stuff. They claimed I was a too frequent user. I fired them twice and this last time I signed on to Netflix and really don't have many complaints ,other that the sorry selection they have on download!!Their selection is not as good as BB but the turnaround is good. SO FAR!

ARMIDA NOGUEZ

i am getting a lot of movies that are old. i have seen a lot of them. YET I DONT GET ANY ON MY LIST.
