Netflix Not Interested in PSP UMD Movies
RealTechNews has an update on Netflix and PlayStation Portable UMD format movies:
So I gave Netflix a call to see if they’re still sitting this one out. Steve Swasey, Director of Corporate Communications, told me Netflix has no plans to rent UMD movies saying it’s a “highly specialized, marginal” market niche. Instead Netflix is focusing new media attention on high definition DVD offerings.
RTN says that 8 million UMD movies have been sold, and Sony is forecasting 130 million by 2008. There were approximately 1.2 billion DVD's sold in 2004, so this is really a small market (so far). If you're interested in renting, Gamefly has a selection of UMD movies.
Does anyone want to rent PSP UMD movies from Netflix?

Gamefly.com, which is basically Netflix for video games, has begun to rent out PSP games and movies. I don't know how great their selection is as I don't have a PSP, but they have something.

Gamefly has a good selection of UMD movies and PSP games, but yes, I would love to be able to rent these from Netflix as well. Gamefly is pricier since they focus on games.

Geeze, who watches UMD movies? Dismal battery life, proprietary format, incompatibility with current players... stupid Sony.

Hmmmm....I do. I watch movies at the gym, on the bus, at work..etc. Beats hucking around a laptop or portable DVD player. And sure it's incompatible with current players...what did you expect? Current players aren't meant to be portable.

I'm pretty sure the $30 price tag on PSP movies is causing Netflix to be turned off by it.
