The San Jose Mercury News is reporting that Vivid Entertainment (warning: adult content) will be offering movies for download onto DVD's that can be played on any DVD player.
Starting Monday, Vivid Entertainment says it will sell its adult films through the online movie service CinemaNow, allowing buyers to burn DVDs that will play on any screen, not just a computer. It's another first for adult film companies that pioneered the home video market and rushed to the Internet when Hollywood studios still saw it as a threat.
"Leave it to the porn industry once again to take the lead on this stuff," said Michael Greeson, founder of The Diffusion Group, a consumer electronics think tank in Plano, Texas.

The $19.95 movies will use a new form of copyprotection (not CSS) that will prevent them from being copied.
"The $19.95 movies will use a new form of copy protection (not CSS) that will prevent them from being copied..."
For at least 5 minutes - until the next version of AnyDVD or DVDFab Decrypter is released. If you can burn it, you can copy it. No matter what protection they devise, somebody will always find a way around it. They're using proprietary burning software, but it has to work in most DVD players.
The prices are obscene, as usual with DRM-infected media files. As if the ordinary prices weren't bad enough ($30-40 for most adult DVDs and tapes), the greedy thieves now expect you to pay half that and do all the work yourself - burning and printing it. I will only buy movies on DVD if I can't rent them, borrow them, buy them used, or download them. When companies get their heads out of the clouds, I may check them out.
Here's what I want: unlimited movie downloads, and burning for $20 a month or less with NO DRM. (Like eMusic was in the old days, before they got greedy and went to the limited download model...) I'm not going to pay more than $2 per movie, because I get that much almost everywhere I rent: Hollywood MVP, Netflix, Blockbuster Online, Movie Pass, Rewards, 2-for-1 coupons, 99-cent coupons, etc.

No offense, but who cares what you want? You already said you don't buy DVDs.

I do buy DVDs, if they're not available to rent or not available in the USA. I have bought DVDs in the past. Quite a few, in fact. Then I noticed most of them were not watched more than once. So, I stopped buying - unless it was impossible to get any other way. If something came along that was really great, I'd buy it (on sale). But mostly I just rent it or borrow it from the library. The movie industry must recognize that most people get tired of collecting eventually. They need a download service that gives people convenience and value. Watch more for less.
