I'm too old for social networks, but I just signed up for Flixter to see what all the fuss was about. They have close to 9 million user home pages and 292 million movie ratings, and it seems like a fun place for movie fans.

Does anyone belong to Flixter? What do you like or dislike about the service?
Thanks to Christine for sending this in.
It's great to see what other people (friends) have in common with you at least in movie taste. What sucks is that I have to re-rate all the movies I already rated in Netflix.

The average member has only rated 33 movies. Does anybody remember what Netflix's average was? Most people probably haven't rated any. Averages are skewed by movie buffs, who rate thousands of movies. Ratings are not useful, overall. Reviews are more helpful, but still skewed by selection bias. Movie buffs create most ratings, reviews, and votes on reviews. Not all people who see a movie rate it. Even fewer write a review. There is a ratings and selection bias.

All the girls on Flixster look like those pictured above. Honest!

I love Flixster. I've wasted several hours making custom lists and it has a widget to paste in MySpace or another website of the most recent movies you've rated or commented on.

If all the girls on Flixster look like those pictured above, I don't think their recommendations will be very useful in helping me find the movies I want.

True, but it would probably help convince more people to sign up.

Nor your information, not all the girls on flixster look like that.
Some of them are...well let's say revealing but you get that on any website pretty much.
I've had an account on flixster for about a year and a half and I have almost 2000 ratings and reviews, when it gets right down to it, we enjoy flixster b/c it's a fun place to rate movies, post on forums about movies, tv shows, books, and it's just a good site.

Has anyone seen the state in which the site is?
Features get added all the time, but hardly used.
It's a poser's heaven.
