I want netflix to create a Vista MCE plugin that allows me to browse my queue and their titles as well as browse the PlayItNow features.

I'm willing to bet the NetFlix box won't need a hard drive. That by itself would drop the price significantly.

I'm hoping they'll offer the box below $100. Heck, they may decide to eat the cost and offer it for free. That said, I'd probably get one even if it's more than $200.

$300-$400 is the right price for a set-top box. If it is dead easy to setup and works well then households will flock to it in droves. This is the Holy Grail for the movie industry....a set top box that is fool-proof and works and is reasonably priced.

$300-$400 is the right price for a set-top box? What planet are you from?

Why would I buy something that I can rent from the cable company for $5-$10 per month and get VOD (some providers sell HD-VOD as well -- Comcast most notably)?

I could get a XBox 360 with a 20GB hard drive for $350 or a XBox 360 Elite with a 120GB hard drive for $450.

What are the benefits of the Vudu? It has a 250GB hard drive -- great so it can hold 100 movies. Vudu seems to have studio deals in place, too. What are some of the drawbacks? Vudu has no Wi-Fi.

Sorry, I'd rather buy either a HD-DVD player (for as much as 40% less than the Vudu) or a Blu-Ray player (for as little as 15% more than the Vudu). You can get five free movies by rebate with either player as a bonus, too. Or I could get the XBox HD-DVD add-on for 55% less than the cost of the Vudu (again getting five free HD-DVD's by sending in a rebate form).

I suspect Netflix might introduce a contract so that you can get the box at a discount so long as you stay with them for a year or two.

Leo I am talking about your average household. If it is easy to install and easy to use then $300-$400 is not a deal killer for your average household.

Your average household does not want wifi or video games or extra attachments. Take out of the box, plug it in to the wall and your tv and start watching. That's it.

Plenty of retiring baby boomers are going to have alot of time on their hands to watch movies over the next decade. If a company can perfect a very simple set-top box they will make a mint (and the inside word is Vudu delivers this).

"If a company can perfect a very simple set-top box they will make a mint (and the inside word is Vudu delivers this)."

No Hi-Definition over Component is a dealbreaker for me. No HD content available now is a problem, too. This company could be out of business in a year or two.

I don't have an ethernet cable running to the back of my television -- do you? I'm sure there are a lot of people who have cable modems next to their sets (I used to be one of them), but not everybody is so lucky (in this case serendipitously, although wives have been moaning about that cable modem box sitting next to their TV for some time now).

By buying the Vudu box for $400, will I have access to Vuze, Joost, Hulu, iTunes, unBox, etc.? Probably not.

SlingMedia will be selling a SlingCatcher for under $200 which should be able to look at any web content. And it will be expandable with an optional hard drive that will be sold separately (or possibly bundled). The SlingCatcher will be available in a few weeks/months (fall 2007).

If I could stream ALL 70,000 of Netflix's titles I would be willing to pay a lot... probably $500 for a box and $100/month. It would allow me to cancel cable which would save a lot of money.

so many choices and selections required. Probably be better off if people could create their own channels via the programs offered through such a service and then let other people watch them. Create your TCM or TVLand.

There's a lot of Netflix 70,000 titles that I'd pay not to have to endure flipping through.

i have such a box -- it's called a tivo. i record everything, then watch it later (no channel surfing). i plan on watching bionic woman and chuck on my tivo next monday when amazon's unbox makes the first episodes of both show available to download to my tivo. hopefully, i will be able to download journeyman next week, also.
