Jim suggested a survey of HackingNetflix readers, now that Netflix shows you your rank, number of reviews, etc.
How long have you been a member?
How do your rank? Jim's rank has ranged from 550 to the current 119.
How many ratings have you done?
How many reviews have you written?
How many lists have you created?
Do you have any friends? Faves?
How many notes have you written?
I rank 32,502 w/ 2,534 Ratings, 6 reviews, 1 list and 16 friends.

My rank has changed from 3000 and all of sudden it's around 9,000. Anyone have ANY idea what happend?

prozac,
I believe they constantly tweak the formula used to calculate rank so it's possible your rank can change drastically without you doing anything.

Rank ~100,000, ~1500 ratings, 12 friends, 7 faves, and 3 lists.

Guess I'm anti-social...
Anyway I wonder what the "Rank" is supposed to represent?? Seems like mine is always less than 50.

Rank is your ranking in the total Netflix community. People who are more active (review movies, have lists, rate movies, etc) are ranked higher. Your rank of 34 means you are the 34th "best" user on Netflix out of millions.

Rank: 12,829, 2905 Ratings, 15 Reviews, 5 Lists, 21 Friends & Faves
Posted by: Stephani | December 13, 2007 at 01:58 PM
Rank: 963, 22217 Ratings, 0 Reviews, 0 Lists, 2 Friends, and 34 Faves (I add anyone who is 76+% similar to me.)
Plus I have a picture of my cat in my profile, a nickname, and a personal statement which I believe help out in the ranking formula.

Oh I have a nickname also - my son's initials since my grandson's was taken (the one I usually use). And also a picture - the family crest (real name is English). The crest is quite comical - two drunk looking dogs supporting a shield between them with the Latin "God save the Queen" below it. I'm sure somebody in the NF community has probably translated the crest into a name.
Maybe that stuff counts toward your rank since I have 0 friends, faves, lists, or notes. 34 Rank is a pretty low number...
I suppose I could generate a few lists pretty much from memory since I watch so many DVDs.

Rank is largely based off people adding movies to their queue from your ratings, lists or reviews pages. You get more rank once the movie actually gets mailed to them. Having your reviews marked 'helpful' also improves your rank.
Nicknames, pictures and personal statements do not directly improve your rank. They can certainly encourage people to come look at your pages though.
Rank is calculated once per week (Wednesday I think). Rank is just a general indicator of how much influence you have over the movies people add to their queue. It doesn't really mean much, mostly for entertainment value.
@CJ - If you add a few lists, you will likely get into the top 10.

Forgot to add, I only rank movies when I see them from NF so I've rated 1095 since I joined. That comes out to an average of 18 rentals per month for me. For awhile I was on the 6 & 8 out plans but no lower than the 3 out - so I guess that's not a bad average.
No notes left either - screw my friends! (maybe that's why I only have 5 :) )

Rank: 10,027 , 3,358 Ratings, 0 Reviews, 3 Lists, 1 Freind(null!), 12 Faves, 24 Fans, 23 Notes, and my picture is the 5th most attractive on Netflix.

Member since November 2006. Reviewer Rank 632. Ratings 1612. 43 reviews, 17 lists. Friends, Faves, Notes all zero.
I don't know about the rest of you, but I only rate films or programs that I have actually seen.

Rank 116,435
281 reviews
0 friends
26 faves (known users between 74-77% similar--highest I've found)
1 fan
6 reviews (helpfulness ratings of 4/4, 6/6, 4/4, 1/1 (discs I gave positive reviews to), 1/5 (negative review), and 1/11 (negative review of "Lady in the Water"--Not Helpful ratings presumably piled on by M. Night Shyamalan fanboyz/fangirlz)

Seems like crap. I was around 300 for a long time, but adding a few "faves" dropped me to 400,000 in a matter of minutes. So, if you want to rank highly, don't have friends or faves.

My rank WAS somewhere around #9,637. This evening I log in, and I'm suddenly ranked #45,112!!!!
What the hell!?! That must have been a MAJOR tweak to the algorithm! Or is it possible that some sort of moderator can alter your rank (if they don't like the politics of your lists, for instance)?!?

I write a *lot* of reviews, but hate social networking and only added my friend because we have a great deal of preferences in movies in common and it makes it easier for us to communicate. I had suspended my account for a few months and went from 19,000 to 70,000 in a very short space. When I re-signed back up, I had submitted a very popular review and got seemingly no credit for it whatsoever Staying at the exact same rank for several months, then gradually creeping up. Suddenly I went from 50,000 to 1500th. You can't think of the number as being of any importance. You don't get anything free. You don't earn any money. It's either useless or an ego thing. I am creating free content for Netflix. That's all I'm doing, besides exercising my writing skills.
