Why isn't a computer on that list?

I received this ad earlier this week - I think it's going out to certain, existing Netflix subscribers.

Ads like this are one of many ways Netflix can differentiate themselves from the competition. I like the strategy of putting the Netflix Streaming capability and UI on as many devices as possible. I'd really love to get it on the SageTV HD extender for my home.

One of the things I noticed in this ad was the "coming soon" for the Tivo. Anyone know when Tivo will get the Netflix Watch-Now Functionality?

"Anyone know when Tivo will get the Netflix Watch-Now Functionality?"

By the end of 2008 (next month) -- only for newer (sold in the last 2 years) Tivo's that can use Cable Cards. Most likely high-definition downloads will not be available until early 2009.

"TiVo with TiVo service
TiVo Series3, HD and HD XL models only
December 2008"

( Netflix monthly service + TiVo monthly service ) > Comcast monthly cable. Enjoy!

BTW, Netflix employees still involved in the DVD side of the BIZ better update their resumes and start looking for a job. With the state of the economy, good luck with that.

gotta go pimpin' for comcast again, eh, ed?

i'm paying $9 per month for netflix (1-out unlimited). my two series 3 tivos have lifetime service. i do pay verizon about $12 per month for cable card rental (4 cards at $3 per month each), also.

i think that comcast's expanded basic (if there is such a thing anymore -- comcast seems to want to shove everybody onto digital) is about $50 per month by now.

Edward R Murrow

Leo, thanks for reminding me about the Verizon/Internet fee which is probably around $20.

Comcast basic which includes VOD is $30 per month.

$9 for 1 out Netflix + $20 Internet fee + $13 Tivo is $42 per month.

Not pimping, just reporting the facts.

leonardodicrapio

Ed,

Comcast basic which includes VOD is $30 per month? The last time I had Comcast (over two years ago), I paid over $40 per month which was Expanded Basic with no boxes. I highly doubt the price has gone down since I left.

Now to give you some credit, maybe you are on a Triple play for $99 per month, and you are rounding the $33 down to $30. Oh, wait a minute, but you seem to claim you have free internet, huh?

Digital Starter from Comcast: http://www.comcast.com/Shop/Buyflow/Default.ashx

The Choice Package from DirecTV: https://www.directv.com/DTVAPP/wizard/buildYourSystem1.jsp?footernavtype=-1

Internet isn't a requirement with Comcast or DirecTV like it is for having a Netflix or BBO account. And if you want to make use of services like Amazon.com for rental/download or Netflix streaming, then a very fast (expensive) Internet connection is a requirement. The total monthly 'nut' for a Nutflix account starts to really add up.

leonardodicrapio

"Promotional Rate is $29.99/month for 6 month(s) for eligible customers, ongoing price is $59.95/month"

The $30 rate is promotional; it doubles to $60 after 6 months. Nice try, Fast Eddie.

John G.

Ed,

I went to that website, and it doesn't offer any CATV package close to $30. These are the only CATV choices for me:

Standard Cable $61.30
Digital Preferred With HBO 49.99/6 mo (90.00 after)

Then there are higher levels of digital cable.

Nowhere near $30. I'll stick with OTA. $0/month, thanks. :)

Oh, and Tivo was $8.33/mo with a 3-year pre-paid for me. Just because I'm OTA, doesn't mean I'm going without my DVR.

So Netflix, is still $9 + internet (say $20, higher for me because I have a much higher tier) plus Tivo fees. Still cheaper than anything Comcast offers in my area (Howard Co, MD). Plus I get DVR and unlimited internet as a nice bonus.

Edward R Murrow

I've been able to stay on the $30 per month Promotional Rate for awhile now just by telling the Comcast Customer Care folks that I'm considering changing to DirecTV if they try to bump me to $60 per month.

Leo, that's pathetic. While you're posting messages on this blog at 3:09AM on a Saturday night, my girlfriend and I were partying at The Avalon.

Oh and what the hell is OTA?

- Oklahoma Turnpike Authority
- Office of Technology Assessment

;-) I bet you mean over-the-air provisioning.

John G.

Sorry, OTA = Over The Air = antenna.

With the new digital switchover, its amazing how many new digital sub-channels like RTN (Retro Television Network) and Universal Sports are out there.

That's why IPTV is so attractive to me. I don't really like Cable TV as is. There is a few channels I watch, but nothing worth paying $60/mo for. Maybe if they switch to ala carte, but I don't see that happening.

Whatever, Ed. BTW, the $30 promotional rate for 6 months/$60 ongoing rate I pulled up is for San Francisco. In my area the rates are $40 promotional rate for 6 months/$58 ongoing rate. You most likely don't get any high-definition cable channels for that $30, either. I pay $33 to Verizon for FiOSTV, which includes HD channels. I can rent a CableCard from Verizon for an additional $3-$4 per month.

I'm not sure why you figure the ENTIRE internet fee in your supposed cost of Netflix, either. My internet costs me more than $20 per month (closer to $33 per month as part of Verizon's triple play), but I use the internet for pretty much just that. I've only used the Watch Instantly a handful of times (about 2-3) over the course of several months.

I use internet primarily just for internet. Before I had high-speed internet, I had two active phone lines (IOW the marginal increase in cost of high speed is not very much because I cut back to one phone line since the second was only used to connect to the internet via dial-up modem).

FiOS is blazingly fast all the time, and Verizon doesn't put a cap on my downloads like Comcast (not that Comcast's current cap would likely affect me, anyways). My rates are locked for 2 years, so I don't have to call Verizon up after 6 months. I don't pay any monthly fees for Tivo.
