The New York Times reports that Netflix has singed a cash deal with South Park Studios to stream the first 9 seasons of the irreverent and often naughty show.
Mr. Stone and Mr. Parker are in the midst of working on the first show of the new season. They have yet to tire of putting the boys in fresh jams and are thrilled by the Netflix deal. The studio met with Hulu and Joost, but only Netflix made a cash offer.
“There was no talk of ad splits or guarantees or advances, just a payment for a show Netflix seemed really happy to have,” Mr. Stone said. “We’ve never given the show to anybody else to stream, but we like Netflix as a service. We use it.”
Mr. Stone suggested their approach could be a game-changer for creators. For example, cable companies worried about migration to the Web could make separate deals and get online rights as well, giving customers a way to access programming any way they choose and creators another payday.
