How would I rate the selection? Pretty poor, really.

The streaming has been pretty good for certain TV shows, but we know that about to change for the worse.

The movie selection just plain sucks. When people ask me about it, I usually tell them the vast majority of the movies are B-movies -- at best.

Of course there are numerous business reasons that better movies are not available, however I stand by my opinion.

Kam

I think the selection is very good. After initially building my Instant Queue (To about 400 items), I have been watching at about the same rate I have been queuing new content. A few times a month I get to take a movie out of my DVD queue that has become available for IW.

Even if, oh, 15,000 of the 17,000 offerings truly were "B-Movies", we're left with over 5 years (1 movie a day) of other content. With an Instant Library that is always changing, and eclectic taste, I like the odds I'll find something rewarding to watch.

Meg

I am really happy with the selection, mostly because they have all the old BBC sitcoms I love so much. Keeping up Appearances, As Time Goes By, Fawlty Towers, Waiting for God, Monty Python's Flying Circus and the rest of the selection have kept me so busy that I haven't even looked at the rest of the offerings.

BOHICA

I canceled my cable long ago in favor of over the air HD, my ROKU box and my dvd player...I am OK with the selection, but would greatly appreciate a greater selection of more current titles...especially from the tv series genre!! I would even be willing to pay a few more bucks a month if it would mean a better, not bigger, selection to stream!!

CJ

Well I'm really impressed - the pace at which Netflix has been adding IW titles is way beyond my expectations! I'm continually amazed at the depth and quality of titles added. Of course Netflix can't add add all those blockbuster New Releases or current TV Series immediately - that's not exactly rocket science logic to figure out. But there's a plethora of great foreign and Indie titles that weren't there just a year ago.

Seven

Mmmm. I dunno. I see a lot of India and gay/lesbian titles pumping up the numbers lately.

Not that's there anything wrong with that.

jjfromnyc

then why even write it down for others to see, SEVEN?

Vern Padgett

I just watched Apocalypto on Instant Watch. Awesome!

BOHICA

There are a ton of Indy, Gay/Lesbian, niche movies that are blowing up the numbers! And I DO have a problem with that...

16,499 of the 17,000 titles will never be watched by the vast majority of netflix subscribers! I don't care that these titles are available to watch, I just don't like the fact that the substance behind the claims by netflix is filler!

no not at all

: )

jjfromnyc

then DROP NetFlix BOHICA, nobody is making you keep it

Adding more content to streaming only increases my odds of finding something I'm interested in watching. When I compare my current experience versus same time last year, I would say Netflix streaming is trending better and better for me.

Sure, I'm disappointed when content is tagged with an expiration date but, ultimately, I never really expect any Internet sourced content to just "always be there" like I do with the DVD's sitting on my shelf.

Final Taxi

Anyone know why all the anime is going away at the end of the month? My daughter has the Instant Queue filled with anime ( she is bed-ridden and the Roku player had been a big help) and we are disappointed that much of it is leaving.

Fred

I have a number of issues. If there are truly 17,000 titles available, they should work on a way to make them accessible. At the moment, I swear I just keep browsing the same 200 movies from their site. Where are these titles hidden? The foreign category?

And also- Still can't really stream netflix on most of my computers since being switched to the silverlight player. It's still junk. I can watch higher quality videos purchased from Amazon on demand ... but netflix skips like a school girl.

Kam

"If there are truly 17,000 titles available, they should work on a way to make them accessible."

Others agree with you, and have taken action. Check out streamingsoon.com and instantwatcher.com. These resources have been invaluable to me.

As far as Silverlight goes, I have PowerPC Macs at home, and have never had access to Netflix' streaming content on my computer. I chose to buy a Roku DVP and have been very happy. XBox 360 supports Netflix Instant, as do some Blu-Ray Players and HD TVs.

Because the streaming contracts with the distributors eventually end. Studios and distribnutors don't like open-ended streaming time frames with their movies.

Jason

I have 466 discs in my disc queue and 484 titles in my instant queue. Practically every week at least several of my selections in the disc queue become available instantly so my instant queue stays full all the time. I have even downgraded my plan to get less discs at a time to use the instant feature more. In fact I don't even subscribe to cable or satellite service since I got netflix so much stuff I can watch I found I wasn't watching anything outside of netfix.

PLB

I like to watch commercial TV. Apparently so do others. There seem to be quite a few peopl who tune to watch those shows about catching crabs and swordfish. Personally I enjoy watching the engineering shows. Others watch logging. I watch "Dirty Jobs" and "Mythbusters". I also watch the news.

The point is that neither DVDs from NetFlix nor WI from NetFlix, nor movies from HBO, Starz, or Showtime is enough to satisfy most of the public's video appetite. If I were to watch TV four hours a day only half of that time would be movie watching. That's only one movie a day. I currently have about 100 movies in my WI queue. Since I add at least a half dozen movies a week, I will never get to the end. My queue will grow over time, as indeed it has.

So is 17,000 movies enough? Was 10,000 insufficient?

Last night I went over to the Amazon section on my Roku and watched an SF movie for $6.00. Was that because I have been betrayed by NetFlix WI or DVDs? Nope. I have three DVDs I from NetFlix I haven't watched yet.

This is what universal availability is like. The customer already has a gazillion options. The 10,000 to 17,000 increase in WI is nice but we are seriously into diminishing returns, In a year or so there will probably be 50,000 movies on WI. I will probably still ocassionally buy a movie from Amazon because there are never enough really good movies.

It isn't the total number of movies that is the limiting factor. It's the number of "good" movies.

tongue in her cheek

cool! 17,000 titles of crap up from 12,000 titles of crap. such a wonderful day, i put a big X on my calendar to commemorate this announcement.

Tom

I think this is great! Hope it continues to grow.
