A Kotaku reader took a survey that asked about Netflix streaming on the Nintendo DS, and it was very similar to the recent iPhone survey.
Imagine that Netflix offers its subscribers the ability to instantly watch movies and & TV episodes on their Nintendo DS. The selection available to instantly watch includes some new releases, lots of classics and TV episodes. There are no advertisements or trailers, and movies start in as little as 30 seconds. You can fast-forward, rewind, and pause or watch again. The movies & TV episodes you instantly watch are included in your Netflix membership at no additional fee.
My kids each have a Nintendo DS, and while I found sites that claim to be able to display video on the DS, I'm having trouble believing that the experience could be enjoyable on the 256x192 pixel screen. The installed base for the Nintendo DS is estimated to be around 152 million units, and it could be one of the largest potential markets for Netflix streaming.
Are you interested in Netflix streaming on the Nintendo DS?
Where's the promised Wii disk to stream Netflix movies?
Posted by: From the Right | March 10, 2010 at 02:37 AM
It would be a fine novelty but I doubt I'd make much real use of it.

Streaming on portable devices is only useful if they have something like 3G.
Something to where you can always connect.
Plus the screen size is a bit small....
Netflix doesn't offer parental controls for kids either....
Well see....
The Wii disc comes out sometime this Month?

I have the ability to watch video on my DS, and when I had a job with a lot of down-time, having a portable video player like that was wonderful. But where I normally have wireless access is off my own router... So it's of no help.
But if it's not your primary form of viewing, it's not bad at all. Put headphones on, and you can actually get into it.
Good idea, but I don't think a lot of people will use it.

Not to interested.

I've converted video down to play on the DS and the results were not very good. I suspect this is a waste of effort.

re: DS streaming? No thanks.

I received my first business loans when I was 32 and that supported me very much. However, I require the commercial loan also.

Oh come on.. you'd be able to watch 2 episodes of a TV show at the same time!

Steve Jobs - the god of all things cool and electronic not owned by Nintendo - said nobody wants to watch video on a tiny screen, which is why the iPod doesn't do video.
Oh wait...

depends where you live . ds does have wifi. so if you are in a town with free wireless you are good to go. or if someplace with free wifi. say a family on the road stopping at a mcdonalds. they can watch a movie on ds. anywhere they can get wireless access. while its not using 3g or 4g its usefull depending where you are. novelty in someplaces,, and in others very useful. i wouldnt be shocked to see netflix on both ds and psp then iphone, ipad and every cell phone that it can be possible to support.

I don't own a DS, so not really. The iPhone thing seemed kind of neat, but given the 3G speeds around here I could see it being an exercise in frustration.

I hope DS doesn't come before iPod/iPhone although I am slightly biased due to my iPhone. I like using my 3G for watching video but the quality is much better (and slower loading times) on wi-fi. When I'm at school, I rely on 3G; at home, wi-fi.

I suppose it would be neat to stream movies from my DS if I was stuck somewhere. I'd get minimal use out of it, but hey, the more compatible devices the better.

would not care either way,,, however... I would use it from time to time I'm sure.

I know they are really pushing this for the bigger screened DSI XL.

My kids would go nuts for this. As-is the first day I got netflix going on the TVs the kids went nuts for it. This would allow the kids to watch all the netflix they want to without blocking the TV. I approve of this idea.

I would be interested to see how the video quality would be on a DS, but if this did go through, I'd probably start using my DS's again. The kids are always tying up the computer and while it will be nice to get the Wii disc, that is still our main TV and I don't necessarily want the kids tying that up all the time either.

I'm guessing the DS & DS Lite users would be SOL.
This would be on the DSi & DSi XL. As the DSi has a channel shop & more memory & space.
Also slightly faster hardware.
Unless Netflix makes a cartage for the DS & DS Lite.
Netflix on the Iphone & DS.... Well see how this turns out I guess?

Oh and I'm sure if the DS does well. The PSP will be next.
Same if the Iphone does well. Then expect Android phones next.

My Kids would definitely watch shows on the DS they play video games on those small screens all the time ,
Posted by: Matt Hendry | March 19, 2010 at 07:58 PM
well it all depends. it would be a good distraction for the kids. plus wasn't nintendo enlarging the size of the ds screen? it could be a competitive marketplace if the new ds model sells.

In my humble opinion is the best console out there, the others simply follow the way when Nintendo has innovated in the market with games like Mario Bros, Zelda, Donkey Kong has always topped the list of the games number one, my respect for Nintendo.

I think Nintendo DSi will gather more players, in the meantime, carte ds like r4 gold and acekard will sell well too.

The screen is definitely on the small side. A bigger screen would make it so much easier to enjoy movies

DS - then iPhones - then Android - then perhaps PSP and other consoles

Watching video on the Nintendo DS is a very enjoyable experience for me. I encode my videos nice and clear and I even at times, add subtitles to the videos in case I am going to be in a noisy area and cant listen to the sound.
I created a Video Tutorial on how you can watch your own video on the DS, the encoder is freeware and safe but you do need an adapter for the DS: Watch Video On Nintendo DS Easily, How To

The typical style of the Tory Burch brand of shoes often pays homage to the styles popularized in the 1950's and 1960's for a sophisticatedly modern throw-back, and manages to create an elegant, classic, and yet not overstated look. Tory Burch shoes began her self-named brand in 2004, designing not only chic shoes but also jewelry, handbags, children's swimwear, and women's cardigans. The versatility of Tory Burch sale footwear is definitely one of the biggest perks of buying within the brand; soccer moms and coy businesswomen alike can wear the line and look fabulously fashionable for a reasonable price.
