Which is why, if you're a film geek like myself, you should lobby friends, pen pals, Twitter & Facebook contacts, and forums to add the MANY recent releases that Netflix isn't carrying to their queues.

dAVe

So, I take it from Swansey that not many people have these two titles in their Queue?

The Cook, Thief, His Wife and Her Lover (1989)
Ken Park (2002)

TigerT

How can you add a movie to your queue if NF doesn't already carry it?
Perhaps you should specify that this is for independent movie producers only, and not subscribers? I wish NF would add a suggestions box, where we could give them titles of movies that aren't in their inventory.As much as I love the service, their don't call us and we won't call you approach puts a damper on things.

Mark

@TigerT,

There are many titles that Netflix will allow you to add to the "saved" section of your cue that they do not currently own. For example, you can add "Song of the South" to the saved section of your cue, which is a movie that has never even been released on DVD yet. This is referring to those movies. Even if Netflix doesn't own the movie, it will usually have a page dedicated to it.

I always add SyFy series to mt DVD queue since I don't get that channel.

Vern

I placed "Song of the South" in my Saved dvds years ago. What a shame this excellent film is not available.

I believe it features the first academy-award winning performance by an African-American actor.

@Mark and @Vern:

I grew up in Atlanta in the 60's and remember seeing "Song of the South" in theaters with my grandmother. I looked for it about 5 yrs ago and actually found it on DVD. I didn't think it was a real Disney release, so I asked my best friend, who works for Disney Publishing in LA about it. He said that it just is not available in the US.

So I spent the $20 and sure enough, the copy that I got had a Disney Paris price tag on it. Yes, it's in English and plays just fine. Mine came from songofthesouth.org

FurryGuyJeans

Yet more and more items I had in my queue go from available status to short wait, to long wait, to very long wait, to unavailable so they get transferred to my saved section.

Most of the DVDs got tossed off my active list in the space of less than 30 days.

@ FurryGuyJeans

I have spoken to a Netflix rep about this before. What you are talking about only happens if a film is out of print and too many discs are lost or damaged.

CJ

This is the exact reason why for years (I recently stopped), I would "obtain" video copies of various movies that had

    not
been released as DVDs in the USA, watch them, and then write reviews on Netflix. I figured if it was a really good movie (e.g. The Hurt Locker comes to mind) and I wrote a glowing review, people would add it to their Saved queue, and Netflix might actually move up in the title up in their buying priority list.

@dAVe

The Cook, Thief, His Wife and Her Lover?

Really? I rented that off Netflix 6 years ago. Maybe they removed it because it wasn't popular, or the distributor is doing some fancy re-release. But it was on Netflix, I rented it from them, and I loved it!

dAVe

One can only speculate as to what happened to the DVD copies of that title that Netflix apparently did have in stock over 4 years ago (lost/stolen/broken) but it seems to me that this would be a great example of getting its replacement on a digital license content deal rather than scouring distributor warehouses for more physical copies.

 Shisha hookah

Basically a place where voting can be used for determining which movies redditors should add to their queues so that Netflix will buy them. Seems like a more effective way to organize and pick movies as a group rather than haphazardly pick movies by oneself and hope that others like the same movies enough.

KEN PARK never came out on DVD in the US (although it came close to getting picked up, hence the Netflix listing, I guess) and THE COOK, THE THIEF has been out of print for a long time.

Where this will work is for catalog titles that have come out recently (in the last year or two), but Netflix opted not to acquire them because they're spending more money on streaming. THE WORD IS OUT and SANTA SANGRE, for instance, got nabbed by Netflix a few months after their DVD release, apparently because of the queue-add thing.

And yes, I realize that most people are not going to know which movies fall into this category. Perhaps it's worth it to type the 100 or so recently "saved" movies into my queue as a comment here, in the hopes that more people will add them....

Perkins Cobb

Almost all of those are titles that Netflix would've purchased had they been available 2 or 3 years ago. Now, I guess, we have to beg for them.

Paul

To support Rifftrax, I always keep their titles in my Q.

As mentioned, I too would like to see a suggestion box to even get a title available to be Saved. There are so many non-US movies and TV shows already released on DVD but are not available to SAVE. Such as The Hollowmen (ABC) and The Thick of It (BBC).

Matthew Ehlers

"Savvy independent directors like Hunter Weeks put Netflix and Blockbuster rental links on the websites"

How exactly did they do this?

London cheap theatre tickets

This is the same exact idea I had when reading this... would be a great way for us to support lesser known or indie movies... or simply ones that NF hasn't added yet.

Tai_pan

There are movies that may not be on DVD that when you try to search netflix for it has never heard of the movie. Such as Lassiter starring Tom Selleck or The Fiendish Plot of Dr. Fu Manchu starring Peter Sellers.
