Should Netflix Offer a Dating Feature?

Dave Winer wonders if Netflix should take their "Friends" feature a bit further:

I wonder if Netflix has ever thought of partnering with Match.com to connect people who like the same kind of movies?

I'm married, but what do the single people have to say about this? Is a Blockbuster store a place to meet other singles on a Friday night?

Hacking Netflix posts an interesting thought: what if Netflix partnered with a dating company and connected people who liked the same kind of movies? Answer: even if they could always agree on what movie to watch, they’d find something else to... [Read More]

Wow! Now that's an interesting concept. I think he might be on to something there.

fantastic idea. It will allow me to publicize all the puns I've made up about throttling.

My boyfriend's queue is all UFC and mine's all French and Italian films and campy sci-fi. Netflix would recommend an immediate breaking-up. :)

Why would netflix do this to their customers?

I don't like my friends seeing some of the stuff on my queue. I don't think this is so hot of an idea. Also when they see I've rated 1200 movies I don't think that would reflect well on myself as a potential mate.

Maybe when NF starts to rent out porn :P

Great idea!

Interesting thought, but dating sites can be so labyrinthine anyway without involving a third-party kind of setup. Most dating services allow you to search for common interests, so you can very easily find people who are interested in the same kinds of films as you - many of these services' search functions are surprisingly advanced. And dating services rely on privacy, so letting a stranger see your queue kind of goes against the necessary privacy of such a system (they rely on anonymity and cloaked identities to prevent sickos from preying on people who just want to meet a friend).

I say keep the whole dating and DVD rental thing SEPERATE.

When will NFLX offer porn? :-)

I think it's the place. Unfortunately people are a bit pessimistic about that.

I was just going through my queue and thought of the same thing, looked it up and voila! someone already thought of this idea too! Taste in movies is a great way for a common bond to develop. Instead of partnering with a dating service perhaps giving people the option of entering a few stats (man seeking woman/man, etc; age; location) and giving people the option of participating might be a great idea. Even if not for dating it could be a great way to make friends and pave way for a social scene.
