...and puts it back.
Winston sent this in:
I hopped on my queue today, and Netflix had a message alerting me that "The Unbearable Lightness of Being" had been removed from my queue and Netflix would no longer be offering it for rental.I thought it was a popular art flick... seems odd that they would remove it. I've attached a screenshot of the message.

When I checked tonight I was able to save the movie in my queue with a "release date unknown." They are probably releasing a new version, and are unable to get additional copies of the old one.
Two versions are currently listed at Amazon:
The Unbearable Lightness of Being - Criterion Collection (1988) - OUT OF PRINT

The same thing happened for me with Gettysburgh last year. The old edition was Long Wait then Unavailable then they kicked it off. A week later the new version showed up, though I had to add it back myself.

This happened to me with "Northern Exposure, Season 1" and I haven't checked lately to see if I could rent it again. I still find it difficult to beleive that Netflix couldn't find a copy of it.

It's available at my nearest Hollywood and Blockbuster. One more way that local stores can still hold their own against online chains. If you're looking for old out of print movies, you're S.O.L. with Netflix and BB Online. For example, I dare you to find "Blues Brothers" (1980) through ANY online store. Now go to your local shop and I'll bet they have it on the shelf gathering dust.
