Ha. Nice. I wrote a program that extracted all the critics ratings and my own, and I found that Ty Burr(Boston Globe) is my best-matched critic. I ran it at 3am in the morning to minimize damage.

I'm thinking of building a system for synchronizing your MovieLens and Netflix ratings histories. MovieLens might very well be the superior engine from the customer's perspective. Netflix's engine is built to satisfy additional requirements that may somewhat reduce its quality (such as pushing older films and films that are currently under-utilized). Of course, its very difficult to judge the quality of the system.

What we need is a web service that correlates the unique ID given to movies for all the major movie sites (starting with just Netflix and IMDB). A web developer could then build hybrid movie info pages combining the best of both sites. Who wants that one? ;)

Ooooh. What if movie makers gave every movie a unique id number upon its release? Like the International Standard Book Number (ISBN)? All movie databases and reviewers could reference this number, making all kinds of data analysis possible. Fun.

Very cool! I searched a random year ('64-'65) and found stuff I'd never come across otherwise!

Jeff

I found stuff I'd never come across otherwise too. Problem is, this includes titles that not only does Netflix not carry, but that no studios have released, and, in quite a few cases, vintage films that no longer exist and are deemed lost by all major archives.

So, I fail to see the purpose of this.

porpoise? PORPOISE?!?! We don't need no steenking porpoise!

The db hack is very cool. 24k entries with hyperlinked titles. However, not only does the list include movies that are not available, it DOESN'T have popular movies that are available. (ie - he's missing popular movies, mega-blockbusters and such). But good greif, how much do you really want?

It seems like he just circumvented the 500 item limit in his qeue and then pulled the list from the Netflix RSS. Anyone know how to get the rest of the data? (full description, MPAA, Director, Cast, etc.)
