i dont trust that number. do they mean discs? special editions? directors cuts? etc etc etc

Rissi

I'm not surprised. They carry a lot of rare and old titles. You also have to remember they carry TONS of tv series, which take up a lot of disks...

Vanden

Who cares, when they don't have alternate versions like "Basic Instinct - Unrated", "Wild Things - Unrated", "The Mummy Returns - Widescreen", and hundreds of other titles that Blockbuster does have. Netflix's policy is to never have alternate versions unless enough people complain (as with the "Lord of the Rings: Extended Edition" movies). I find frequently that Netflix doesn't have the version of movies that I want. It's worth belonging to both services or even favoring Blockbuster if you have certain tastes.

BTW, Netflix probably inflates inventory with lots of exercise videos and self-help crap, plus counting each disc in a set as a separate title, and so forth. Here's the company that pioneered fraud and continues to treat many customers with poor service, and offers no way to get better service. (The more expensive plans just get you more throttling and longer delays, because they're expecting you to keep each movie 10 days.)

Anyway, Who cares about numbers if they don't have the one title you want in the version you want it? Each of the services has unique titles. Enough said.

Becky

This number represents the number of TITLES they have, not the number of discs. They SHIP 1 million discs per day. There have been hundreds of thousands of movies made in the history of cinema, so this number doesn't surprise me a bit. I only wish there were more available!

OH MY GOD Netflix counts exercise and self-help DVDS towards their title count !!! THEY ARE COMMITTING TEH FRAUD

"OH MY GOD Netflix counts exercise and self-help DVDS towards their title count !!! THEY ARE COMMITTING TEH FRAUD"

Oh, right. Because some commenter on a web site said "Netflix probably inflates inventory with lots of exercise videos and self-help crap", all of a sudden it's a fact.

Wow, you people amaze me.

As Becky said, the number of movies made is MUCH, MUCH larger than 45,000. That number is not at all surprising.

"OH MY GOD Netflix counts exercise and self-help DVDS towards their title count !!! THEY ARE COMMITTING TEH FRAUD"

Why wouldn't they count it? It's a published DVD title that they have a right to count. Why would they only count specific genre's. They don't say 45k HOLLYWOOD MOVIES, they state 45k titles.

Kilroy

Am I the ONLY one who detects sarcasm and mocking (teh fraud) in Morgan's post?

Yep!. Seriously, I'm sure they include ALL titles in that count; full length films, documentaries, self-help, concerts, imax, tv series seasons, etc.

What you want (special edition, director's cut, etc.) still may not be in that 45000! ;)

Vanden

I'm simply saying that they don't have everything and the numbers are meaningless. There are probably hundreds of thousands of unique DVD releases. If Netflix inflates the number by getting lots of cheap exercise and self-help, it's not very meaningful to say they have 45,000 titles. And yes, it would be helpful to break it down a bit more and say "we have 20,000 feature films; 15,000 TV series; 5,000 documentaries; and 5,000 self-improvement videos." And point out that they don't carry alternate versions unless enough (profitable) customers complain.

Pinball Mars

I'm surprised that people are SURPRISED (and suspicious) of the 45,000 figure. It sounds very plausible. I guess some of you guys haven't noticed, but the format of DVD is very popular. Huge numbers of DVDs come out every week.

And yes, Morgan's post was obviously sarcastic. What's with you people?

downidb

And I hate to say it, but I've got Yoga for Pregnancy at home for my wife. Some of us are glad they've got exercise DVDs so we don't have to buy that crap ourselves.

duff

"OH MY GOD Netflix counts exercise and self-help DVDS towards their title count !!! THEY ARE COMMITTING TEH FRAUD"

That's why I'm considering using Netflix. I only watch self-help and exercise DVDs. But I never claimed to be normal.... :)
