Haven't had personal experience with these machines, but they seem like a great way to suppliment a Netflix (or Blockbuster, Greencine, etc) subscription - very useful if you feel like watching a movie but don't currently have any titles at home, or if you want to get a new release but it's on an extended waitlist. Doesn't seem like it'd be a good primary rental source though, due to the lack of selection (reminds me of when I used to rent DVDs at Longs a few years ago - 99 cents a night, but not that many titles available...)

A friend of mine lives in a densely populated area. She says she sometimes visits two or three different locations only to find all the movies she wants are out of stock in all of them.

On the one hand, that means to boxes are popular. On the other hand, how many times are you going to drive out only to find there's nothing to rent?

Checking out redbox.com, I was amazed at how this is one rental company that isn't afraid of getting a few phone calls when their customers have problems. I for one look forward to the day that they add their service to the Cleveland area.

You Can get free movies from a Red Box. I havent tried it yet. Rent the DVD as usual, when the DVD comes out you dont take it out just hold it. Then its going to suck it in but on the 3rd time of it sucking in you take it out and if you did it right the its going to say that there was an error and your account wont be charged. ENJOY!!

BEWARE: the kiosks can malfunction and not recognize a return, causing a charge for the full sales amount of the video. After renting many times with no problem, one rental was returned at the kiosk, the touch screen said "dvd returned sucessfully" but I never received an email confirming the return. A month later, I get an email notice saying they are charging me $26.94 in additional to the daily $1 daily rental fee. When I called their customer service, they refused to acknowledge any possibility of a technical malfunction, and insisted that the only thing they can do for me is to give me a discount of $10 off the $26.94.

Briggitte, why didn't you call customer service after not receiving a confirmation email?

mike

I reserved the dvd online, but couldnt pick up the dvd because the kiosk was out of service.

I called the cust service to cancel the reservation, but then they still charged me.
Its just $1, but imagine how many customers may have the same issue.
The kiosk is not reliable.

My husband and I were charged $47.88 as a pre-authorization on our first rental. Never mind the fact that when we completed the rental transaction, there was no mention of any charge other than the $1 overnight rental charge! $47.88??????? Please. I'll pass, thank you very much. We're pleased as can be with Netflix.

Problem - was charged over $20. - said the DVD was not returned - it was! When I called the serv. rep. at the toll free number, was treated very disrepectfully! Was told they would only give a $10 credit.
I insisted that the movie had been returned -my history shows consistent timely returns, and I told them I would contact the Il. attorney general. They finally agreed to reimburse the full amount, but said that would be the last time they would do that! I have been a long term customer - renting about 1 movie a week! This was a complete surprise. They movie was rented in Dec., but I was not billed until Feb. I was never emailed of any problem. I feel this may be another way to generate income...
Never AGAIN - way to much work, and hassle.
Was a very satisfied customer up until this incident...

Briggitte, why didn't you call customer service after not receiving a confirmation email?

Exactly...be more proactive dude!!!

Arto

Absolutely rip off, misleading! Their customer service is HORRIBLE! They are trained to say nothing but NO! You think it is convenient,a better deal etc. They say first "there is absolutely no late fee" then they add "we will charge you for each night!" They almost have only 10 movies available and you have to wait for a long time if you have someone in front of you! Why would anyone want to go this far to rent a movie that may be available? And then hurry up and return it. You can get so many of them from Netflix, Blockbuster in 1-2 days.

DJ

I'm a spur of the moment kind of movie watcher so Redbox is much more my style than say a netflix. I don't want to order a movie and wait for it to show up a couple days later cause by then I may not have the free time or urge to watch it anymore. And It has always accepted my 20 or so rental returns with no problem. How many nights do you need a movie? Get it. watch it. take it back. You're not gonna watch it over again for continuous nights. And if you have it for 3 days, it's still cheaper than one night at any other video store. I'm just saying it is pretty sweet if it is convenient for you. If it's out of the way, than stick with netflix.

Leisa

BEWARE....I have been charged $56.14 and $26.08 in one month for movies they say I didn't return over 45 days ago. Even when the machine says successfully returned...Then they tell you they will send a tech out within 10 bus. day....yea right....good luck throwing your money away! This isn't a good way of renting DVD's and there customer service sucks...hold time is long!

K. E.

I use Redbox for the same reason Dj does, because I'm a spur of the moment movie watcher. If I happen to have time, I go get a movie from Redbox and watch it then return it the next day. Why would I want to pay a monthly charge if I'm not gonna watch any movies that month? In the end I save tons of money by only renting $1 movie when I can watch it.... Even if I don't return it next day I've still saved lots of money because its only $1 per day. I've never had any problems with verification of a return, and any complaints I've voiced have been handled by giving me free movie rental codes to compensate for any inconvenience. :)

LV

Total waste of time. You have to stand in line for 20 minutes to rent and then another 20 minutes to return. Sure it's a buck, but back and forth, waiting in line to return a movie? This won't last long. Oh yea, if the machine is broken, go fish. You have to drive around to find another one before your time is up!

mike

Quality Is VERY POOR. In Recent months, Newly released videos we have rented are scratched or not porperly handled, and will not play properly. Also, the week before christmas, we had 2 movies to return in pittsburgh pennsylvania and drove 3 different places and all machines wouldn't accept returns because of being full. We don't rent often,

erika

Redbox is a joke. You are better off at Blockbuster or Netflix.
Redboxes are CONSTANTLY "unable to receive returns at this time"
...so...you have to jump back in your car and search for one that isn't filled to capacity.
Tonight, I TRIED to return last nights movie (I RENT ALOT!) and the redbox could not accept returns, AGAIN. I rented 3 more movies and then attempted to return last nights movie once again. It was dark, not a good neighborhood, in front of 7/11. I accidentally returned a movie I just rented. This meant I had another $1 debited for my late movie, I didn't have the movie I just rented, AND I had to go back to rent the movie I returned. I burned gas, stood in a long line and was also on hold for 1/2 hour trying to get ONE STINKING coupon code for my trouble, which REDBOX refused. After quickly renting over 100 movies with them, I am done...The message they sent was that...I am not worth a buck. Netflix, here I come.

SION

WARNING,WARNING,WARNING,WARNING,WARNING,WARNING,WARNING,WARNING,WARNING,WARNING,WARNING,WARNING,WARNING,WARNING,WARNING,WARNING,WARNING,WARNING,WARNING,WARNING,WARNING,WARNING, THIS PEOPLE 2 TIMES CHARGED ME 24 AND 26 DOLLARS SAYING I RETURNED AFTER 25 DAYS. I TOLD THEIR POLICY I WOULD NOT RETURNED THEM, BECAUSE i KNOW THAT I WOULD BE CHARGED AND I COULD KEEP THE DVD FOR MY SELF. SO, BE AWARE THEY KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING, THEY THINK IF A CLIENT UNDERSTAND THEY JUST RETURN IF NOT THEY KEEP MONEY AND CHARGE MORE. NOW THEY PROMISE TO MY LOWER TO REFUND THE 2 CREDIT CARDS. I AM WAITING FOR THAT.

Artin

BE AWARE: Redbox kiosks don't work properly. When you return them, they accept but then you can have surprises after 25 days: I have been charged 25 dolars for a one night dvd rent.I called the costumer service, it sucks!!!! I have been on hold for 45 minutes!!!!!!!! can u immagine?????

better thing to do

Cheap yes, but it wastes a lot of time with frozen screens, missing titles and waiting to return a movie while somebody else is searching for a title.

Tim

They may be cheap, but they are not particularly honest. The company admits that the machine we rent and return at was broken the day we returned our film and not recording the returns. The company then charged the people who returned films on that day to the broken machine $27, in addition to the $1 for the rental. When contacted, they admitted that the machine was at fault, but they still wanted our money. WATCH OUT!
