That messes up my "swap the discs so that one from a nearby facility goes to a far away facility" plan :(


In the rare cases where a disc ships from a far away facility, probably due to limited availability, the return label is always that same far away facility. At first I was concerned I would have to wait the week or so for the disc to go back but I found it was always received the next day. I realized then that the address on the return label is irrelevant.

The address is to the Nearest Netflix Shipping Facility with a PO Box, City State shown for legal reasons (i.e. every item mailed must have an address.) The return(ed) envelopes are placed into coroplast trays which are placed into wheeled containers, called APCs. The APCs are trucked to the (see above.) So in short the address is ignored. The return address is where the netflix was shipped from, which may not always be the nearest netflix facility.
BTW I work at a USPS processing facility where this happens at. This is the most effecient way for Netflix to get the disc back as soon as possible.


So when on the one DVD plan, if I mail the DVD back from a different state, the DVD does not have to go back to the facility where it came from before the next DVD in my queue is shipped?

When travelling I prefer to rip the DVD to my laptop hard drive. That way I don't have to worry about damaging the disc. Also my laptop's battery lasts longer when playing movies from HD instead of DVD. Yes, I delete the movie after watching it... ;-)


I've been doing this for years. Every small town in America has a post office. My wife and I take them traveling with is on short trips and play them in the hotel room or wherever we may be staying. MAil them the next morning. Only lost one, at the post office in D'Hanis, Texas. Netflix cheerfully absorbed the loss, and life was good.


When I moved I had 2 discs that were mailed to me in Kansas City, MO and I mailed them back in Akron,OH. I think it took and 1 extra day to get my next discs but they returned to Netflix in the usual time frame.


I live in CT and have returned in California before. It worked just fine. By the time I returned from my trip, I had new discs waiting.

I've totally done that. I was never worried about it, since it had postage anyway. Also related: I've returned a Redbox movie rented in Northern Virginia to a kiosk in Dover, NJ.


I sometimes get two DVDs from two different places. Sometimes I shove them both into the same return envelope to send to the closer one. This information is nice to know so that I don't have to do this anymore.

Also, whether you send both back in one or not doesn't save or cost Netflix any more or less. Their CEO stated somewhere that they pay the return shipping when they ship them out.


This makes sense to me. I didn't realize, though, that Netflix has their own pile and is handled differently than regular mail. Wonder if other companies do this.


We traveled by Amtrak from Los Angeles to Arkansas. On a stop in Alpine, Texas, I walked to the big hotel to ask where the post office was.

Took forever for him to get off the phone and then he gave me a lot of directions. I just left the mailer with him and when we got back in California, I had a new disc. It was Roul Wallenburg film-- I should have told him to watch it first.

I do return when traveling. And they get them pretty fast usually. My guess is that the post office carriers just put them with all of the other tons of netflix movies and probably return them to the nearest distro center.


I do this all of the time. I travel frequently for work, and often watch movies on planes or in my hotel room at night. I drop them in the nearest mailbox and invariably get discs just as fast as when I return them at home in Northern CA. And it's a little less to carry back with me on the flight home.

This is flawless - it simply doesn't matter where you mail your return discs from, it always goes to the closest Netflix facility and is processed immediately. I've done this in big markets like Los Angeles and smaller places like Little Rock and Bakersfield. Always the same.


Depending on how long you're going to be in a particular place when traveling, it can work fairly well to change your address with Netflix to your hotel. Even just a few days can give you a nice treat while on the road, as long as you remember to change it back in time!


Another interesting question to ask the Blogosphere: Does anyone ever put more than 1 DVD sleeve into single return envelope?

I think I remember some quote from a NetFlix exec saying it was cool to do that up to 3 discs. I've never done more than one.

Yes, I used to do that all the time. I'd put 2 in an envelope. NF encourages this since it reduces their shipping costs.


I never had the occasion to mail DVDs while traveling--I usually don't have anything to view the discs on when I am traveling.

More often than not I will return two discs in one envelope. At one time I think they paid when they got the discs back, so paying for 2oz would be cheaper than paying 2x1oz.

However, much more recently it was indicated that Netflix pays return postage when they send the disc, so stuffing two discs in one envelope won't save Netflix any money. I still stuff two discs into an envelope when I have two to return since that then helps the post office (one item to handle instead of two), as well as gets me a collection of mailers for the occasion when a disc arrives and the mailer is not in good enough shape for returning a disc.

I learned a decade go that if you want to guarantee your disc doesn't disappear in the return mail, you put your return in the same corner collection box, a box with only one daily collection time. This gives a clear return audit trail. Maybe times have changed since a decade ago, when 4 discs I returned at the same time all disappeared, however, I still follow this return procedure.


Yep, have done it all the time, for years.

I also use the "pause account" option when I know I'm going to be gone for a few weeks (and won't be in a position to utilize the streaming), so I don't pay for a service I'm not using.

People who want to watch a movie on the plane can also use Redbox as long as there is a convenient box at the destination. You can return discs at any Redbox.


Yep, I've done this... at least when traveling in the US. I traveled internationally last month, watched a NF disc on vacation, and had to wait til I got home to return it.

On a side note, I returned a disc on Saturday and got a new release on Tuesday. Even though Monday was the MLK holiday, they received my disc and mailed out a new one on that day. That's service I didn't expect!

Constantly. And for the whole time we've had the service (since 2001). See... they use the post office. I can't think of a reason it wouldn't work anywhere in the US.

When they moved to the "Nearest Netflix..." address, that made it faster. Regardless, it takes a letter no more than 3 days to get anywhere I go. If on a trip longer than a day or two, it's always gonna be faster.


of course, it works great. I have even changed my shipping address to the location I was traveling to and had my next DVD mailed to it.


I was under the impression that the US Mail can't give preferential treatment and legally all mail has to be sorted with the same equipment. When did this policy change and was it at the cost of the tax payer?


This is a BIG deal at the PO where I work as a letter carrier, At the end of my day when bringing all the collected mail back to the office, we are required to sort out the Netflix envelopes for separate processing. These used to go in the mailstream for processing and delivery back to the originating Netflix office. About a year ago this changed to the current procedure, thus insuring that the disc goes to the nearest facility, no matter what the address says.


Ultimately, I suppose if the USPS can sort out Netflix red envelopes more efficiently (and thus at lower overall cost) by giving them special handling, it's a win-win for the taxpayers and Netflix customers. The only one who'd complain is a NF competitor who doesn't get that same preferential treatment.

I have a friend who is a long haul trucker. He's on the 8 at a time plan and watches them on the road. He just drops them off wherever he is and then while home for a few days gets his next eight. Been doing it for several years.


I did this too. I was on vacation in South Dakota and returned a movie in a mailbox there that was addressed to one of the shipping facilities in Illinois. They got it the next day, which is remarkable considering there are no Netflix warehouses in South Dakota!


@Adam: Netflix has a facility in Fargo ND... Depending on where in SD your were, the closest facility was ... close...
