XBox 360!

This was pretty amazing to see. I just got an Apple TV and this update was definitely nice; not even the Xbox has this, and I'm not sure about the Roku, but last I heard, only the PS3 had it. I could be mistaken.

Either way, it will just make movie watching that much better! :)

Finally--something other than PS3 with 5.1 sound! I personally love my Apple TV and use it for Netflix as well as rentals from iTunes--and now MLB.tv too. This is a great update to ATV!

Why should 5.1 be available only on some boxes?

I presume that the breakthrough is in the encoding and compression technologies. Netflix streams an encoded version of video not a raw signal. The upper limit on cable or DSL for the mass market in the US is about 5Mbps. This translates for Netflix as a roughly 3.5Mbps ceiling. Under that limit they managed to squeeze in 720p video but didn't have enough room at first for 5.1 sound. Presumably in the last year or so they have managed to squeeze in some more - 5.1 and subtitles.

If this account is correct then I don't see what it has to do with the receiving hardware.

However only very few titles offer 5.1 or 1080P or offer captions and English dub tracks or alternate audio tracks right now....
